The three-day course will deal with many of the deterioration mechanisms of concrete that can make a reinforced concrete structure partially or totally unusable, aesthetically unacceptable, or unsafe. The incidence of acidic gasses in the atmosphere is increasing steadily and is able to reduce the ability of concrete to protect steel reinforcement. The mechanism is not clearly understood by designers and contractors, and will be explained along with the cause of many other aggressive factors that act on concrete
Who is For?
- Designers of reinforced concrete structures where the client has an anticipated life span without maintenance
- Contractors who want an awareness of the effects of poor material selection and workmanship
- Client and government bodies who wish to protect reinforced concrete assets which are very expensive to construct
- Specialist contractors who undertake repairs of concrete structures
- Suppliers of ready mixed concrete who need to design concrete for special purposes

Course objectives:
- An ability to foresee the requirements of the concrete material during the design stage and specify accordingly
- Expertise in the production of concrete to suit the requirements of a
specification - Skills in the identification of the cause of defects and the most
probable consequences - Understanding the importance of constituent material selection and its effect on concrete properties
About:
This course is a 2-day interactive webinar course about
Mastering Concrete: Specification, Inspection & Restoration of Reinforced Concrete Structures Training,
Presented by, Bruce Raath PrEng CEng
Catering by UBER Eats (Meal Vouchers Daily)
Program
Overview:
- Where does the responsibility of a consulting engineer or contractor end?
- On the completion date, at the end of a maintenance period or when the structure requires maintenance some 50 years after construction. From whom can the client claim costs of repair at that stage?
- Concrete is subject to deterioration due to several factors ranging from abrasion of floor surfaces, exposure to acids, and corrosion of steel reinforcement. Proper specification, testing, and workmanship can prolong the useable life span of reinforced concrete structures.
1
Outline:
- Constituent materials for concrete and their effects, particularly cement extenders such as Blast furnace slag or Pulverised fuel ash
- Aggregates and their influence on shrinkage, elastic modulus, alkali-aggregate reaction, water demand, absorption, and cracking
- Properties of concrete in the plastic, green and hardened states, and site operations in each state to prolong the life span of concrete
2
Deterioration mechanisms on hardened concrete
- Mechanical deterioration such as cracking, abrasion, salt crystallization, freeze-thaw, thermal cracking, and modulus of elasticity
- Environmental factors such as acidic gasses and chlorides
- Erosion by moving water and attack by pure water
- Additional stresses due to structural misalignment
- The interface between different materials and fire damage
- Durability testing for the protection of steel reinforcement
3
Detection and repair of concrete defects
- Visual examination
- Concrete sounding and half cell measurements
- Use of covermeter, strain gauge, Schmidt hammer, pull-off test
- Repair of defects, repair of cracks, removal, and repair of defective concrete, surface preparation, and repair materials
- Repair of specific structural elements

About The Trainer?
Bruce Raath was recently featured as Concrete Expert of 2015 by the International Who’s Who of Professional Engineers based in New York. He was the Past National President of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa. BA Raath & Assoc. is a consultancy operating in the field of concrete construction, repair, failure diagnosis, and design, with reference to floors. The consultancy undertakes expert witness work and provides technical advice on the practical site use of concrete and design of concrete structures.
Training courses have been presented in the UK and African Countries along with courses in many centres in South Africa. Specially adapted in house courses have been presented to many of South Africa’s leading contractors and consulting engineers.
